What is Illegal Dumping?
Illegal dumping is the disposal of waste in a place without the consent of the landholder. It’s different from littering because illegal dumping is usually done intentionally.
Illegal dumping can also include leaving items not meant for collection on Council kerbside land or leaving materials outside charity shops or donation bins without consent.
On the surface, illegally dumped waste causes an unpleasant visual amenity that detracts from the overall value of the community. Illegally dumped waste on the roadside looks bad and can smell bad, but on a deeper level, illegally dumped waste is a detriment to our region in the following ways:
Economic
Waste that is illegally dumped must be cleaned up by someone else. In the Isaac region, this clean-up is usually done through Council, and a single instance of illegally dumped waste can cost thousands of dollars in working costs and labour. Funds that can be spent elsewhere on improving our community services are diverted to cleaning up someone else’s mess.
Social
Illegal dumping by law is a crime and there is no way around it. Illegal dumping hotspots attract even more illegal dumpers to dump waste at the same location. This leads to a perceived belief or social norm that illegal dumping is okay and that it’s just an everyday thing to do, increasing rates of crime and anti-social behaviour within our Isaac communities.
Environmental
At the forefront of all its negative impacts, illegal dumping has adverse effects on our environment. Materials that degrade or leak toxic substances into our environment impact Isaac’s flora, fauna, soil and waterways and damage our precious region’s biodiversity.
The illegal dumping of green waste also spreads exotic weeds through our region, smothering and damaging our native flora and increases risk of bushfires occurring.
Reporting Illegal Dumping – Call 1300 ISAACS (1300 472 227)
Under Queensland’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Act 2011 (WRR Act), the community has the power to manage and report litter and illegal dumping in Queensland. In the Isaac Region, this translates to calling 1300 372 227 and reporting instances of illegal dumping you may see around our beautiful landscape.
Illegal dumping is a crime. Any person found to be illegally dumping will be penalised because they are intentionally harming our Isaac region’s native flora, fauna, and beautiful landscapes that make the Isaac region home.
