Upper Nogoa and Mackenzie River Catchments Flood Study
There are many areas impacted by flood across the Isaac Region. Isaac Regional Council is continuing to work towards understanding our flood risk better to improve the resilience of our communities and the availability of flood information to our community.
Each flood event is different. The rain falls in different locations and at different intensities. What happened in the last flood will not necessarily be replicated in the next flood. However, with each flood event we can better prepare the community through more accurate predictive modelling of future flooding.
Council’s Flood Study Program seeks to improve our understanding of the flood risks to our communities in order to manage risk and support emergency preparedness and infrastructure planning.
UPPER NOGOA AND MACKENZIE RIVER CATCHMENTS FLOOD STUDY
Council has engaged engineering consultants KBR to prepare the flood study which is being funded with support from the Queensland Resilience Authority program, ‘Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements: Flood Risk Management’.
The flood study focuses on understanding flood hazards across the study area under existing and projected climate conditions for several key rainfall events. The results of the study will provide a better understanding of the flood risk posed to property and people and will support the improved management of these risks in the future.
The study was commissioned in October 2025 and is currently in the data collection stage. Throughout this stage, Council and KBR are collating data and historic flood information which will be used to inform development of future flood models.
Development of the flood study will take approximately 8 months and will involve public consultation during which stakeholders and landowners will be provided with project updates and opportunity to comment on findings. Council and KBR will be undertaking a site visit throughout the study area during November as part of the current stage of works.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
Did you know that you can help Council with our flood planning? Council is seeking any information that property owners or stakeholders may have about historic flood events throughout the study area.
Specifically, we would love to hear from you if you took any photos, made a flood marker of have a rain gauge that recorded flooding within the study area. This kind of information will help by providing inputs into modelling to ensure that the calibration of our flood modelling is as accurate as possible.
